Sensitive Teeth

Tooth sensitivity, also known as dentine hypersensitivity, occurs when the nerves protected by the layer of dentine in the teeth are exposed to the environment. Someone with sensitivity may experience discomfort when teeth are exposed to hot or cold elements (beverages, treats) and depending on severity, the sensation may range from irritation to intense pain.

Contributing factors to sensitivity include regular wear and tear on teeth, tooth decay, exposed tooth roots and sometimes acid reflux.

Brushing and flossing regularly to reduce plaque buildup, regular dental visits, and eating a healthy diet low in fermentable carbohydrates and acidic foods are all useful preventative measures that may reduce the chances of developing dental sensitivity. Toothpastes with potassium nitrate, designed to protect teeth from sensitivity, may also offer relief.
